Some nursing mothers wean prematurely maybe because of the busy work, but some may not. Mastitis, a kind of bacterial infection which leads to breast inflammation painfully, and nursing mother will find breast redness most of the time. That pain stops the mother continues to feed her infant although most of them have awareness of the importance of the breast feeding at the first 6 months after birth.
Two probiotic strains, Lactobacillus fermentum and Lactobacillus salivarius can be also found in breast milk, have shown the significant reduction of the breast pain. In this study (2010), 352 breastfeeding mothers with mastitis involved, after 21 days with 90 billion cells of either of above two strains capsules daily. At the meantime, it shows a lower bacterial counts and more complete recovery rate, after comparing the group who took antibiotic. And for recurrence rate of the infection, antibiotic group was 30.7%, and for the group who took either of the two strains had a lower rate (10.5% and 7.1%, respectively).
We know there are plenty of probiotics products on the market, most of them are for the purpose of diarrhea relief, or immune enhancement. To support the treatment of mastitis, we need the product with the strain of Lactobacillus fermentum, or Lactobacillus salivarius. Here is the product we found for your reference:
Nexabiotic Probiotic Advanced Multi-Probiotic contains Lactobacillus salivarius, and other 20 strains with 15 billion CFU per serving (2 capsules). With delayed release capsule, it may protect probiotic from acid inside of stomach.
PRO-15 Advanced Strength Probiotics contains both of Lactobacillus fermentum and Lactobacillus salivarius, and other strains, with 15 Billion CFU per tablet.
Please also notice that the treatment for mastitis is with dose of 90 billion for 21 days to reduce breast pain and infection, the above two probiotics products are much lower than this dosage, so it may need more time to see the effectiveness after serving.
